Springer Life Sciences Protocols now available online

Springer Protocols is the world’s largest database of life sciences protocols, outlining experimental methods in the life sciences, particularly molecular biology. We now have online access to the protocols published between 1980-2012, and you can print and download them. They are all individually listed by title on the Library catalogue, or you can search them here.
  • They provide written procedural methods in the design and implementation of experiments that describe the safety, bias, procedures, equipment, statistical methods, reporting, and troubleshooting standards to be used in order to successfully conduct the experiment.
  • Each protocol is templated into four sections - Introduction, Materials, Methods, Notes - so that information will always be exactly where you expect to find it.
  • Each protocol is a chapter of a book, and each book is a collection of protocols on a given research topic. The protocols are derived from 6 book series (listed below), plus 21 additional books outside of any series.
  • Methods in Molecular Biology (907 volumes)
  • Methods in Biotechnology (24 volumes)
  • Methods in Molecular Medicine (140 volumes)
  • Methods in Pharmacology and Toxicology (11 volumes)
  • Neuromethods (70 volumes)
  • 8 Springer Protocols Handbooks titles

Latest research from Birkbeck Biological Sciences researchers

BIROn - Birkbeck Institutional Research Online - is a database of research papers deposited by Birkbeck researchers and academics. Here are the papers, available in full text, that have been uploaded by members of staff from the department of Biological Sciences this year.
Click on the links to see the full papers, but bear in mind that some of these may be the author manuscripts, not the final published versions. You will need your ITS account to log in.

You can also follow BIRON on Twitter to get the latest additions: https://twitter.com/BIROnbbk

2014 - International year of Crystallography

Those of you who pursue studies, research and careers in Crystallography, you will be very pleased to know that 2014 has been declared as the International year of Crystallography (IYCr2014 for short) to celebrate a century since M. Von Laue was awarded the Nobel Prize for the Diffraction of X-rays by crystals and Kepler’s observation in 1611 on symmetry of ice crystals.

The celebratory year will commence with a "glittering" Opening Ceremony in UNESCO's HQ, in Paris, in 20-21 January 2014.
UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography launched a new website where you can follow up events, announcements and learning materials such as Audio/Visual presentations and a plethora of educational websites. The website will be sustained after the end of 2014 as a permanent resource of the International Union of Crystallography's web presence.

It is valuable to note that a new peer-reviewed open access journal will be launched as part of the 2014 celebrations. The International Union of Crystallography Journal (IUCrJ for short).

The journal will cover:

  • biology and medicine
  • chemistry and crystal engineering
  • materials and computation
  • neutron and synchrotron science and technology
  • physics and free electron laser science and technology[1]

New acquisitions for 'Biology' to our catalogue during January 2012.

Last month enriched the content of our Library’s collection with104 new items, including books, electronic books and films, covering a wide range of Biology topics. The collection reflects your academic interests and areas of your studies, but also illustrates the fascinating nature of interweaved disciplines through topics such as Psychobiology, Social Bioarchaeology‎, Geobiology, Biogeography, and many more.

The list of new books and films is very long but worth exploring. Enjoy!
