Library news: Browzine trial

Browzine trial
BrowZine is an interface which allows you to browse eJournals available in the Library's collection and open sources using an app for your tablet, iPhone, Android, or via a web version on your computer.
BrowZine sorts these eJournals into broad subjects and then narrower disciplines. When you create your own user account, you activate features to save and organise your favourite eJournals on virtual book shelves for easy browsing and monitoring current content.

You can also access it via a desktop website at http://browzine.com/libraries/1200 .
Please see the eLibrary News announcement for more detail on how to set up BrowZine and begin to use it

New journal for Earth Sciences

We now have access to the Journal of the Geological Society from 1971 up to present via the eLibrary.

Journal of the Geological Society (JGS) is the Geological Society of London's flagship journal, publishing only the most topical and highest quality articles covering the full range of the Earth sciences. The Journal features short communications, interdisciplinary articles and reviews in key areas, and is one of the key titles for researchers in the geosciences.

You can access it via this link with your Birkbeck IT account

Science Magazine online

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our online subscription to Science magazine, as the cost of renewing for 2013 has doubled from $3,000 to over $6,000. We have access to back volumes up to 2006 via our subscrition to JSTOR and we still have a print subscription - copies can be found up on Level 4 of the Library. Academic staff can request for articles to be scanned by the Library in order to make them available via Moodle.

We hope that we may be able to resume our subscription in 2014.

Scitable – Online Scientific portal

Scitable is an online scientific website, offered by the editorial teams of Nature Publishing Group, currently focusing on Genetics and Cell Biology, with plans to expand into other areas of life sciences.

Content in Scitable is free to access and use, and all the articles are peer-reviewed by scientists and educators prior to being published.

You can start exploring Scitable by visiting the Topics area, or by choosing a guided path through the Learning Paths for more complex topics, such as Genetic variation and evolution, cancer, etc.

You can also register on the website to connect with other science students or experts in the field, save your favourite articles and join a group.

Do you want to go beyond Scitable? The Birkbeck Library subscribes to the Nature Journal published by the same publishers. To access it outside the college, just search for “Nature” in the ejournals search box, follow the link provided and enter your ITS username and password.
